Down on the Farm - 5/20/13

AAA - Fresno 10 Oklahoma City 3

Asher Wojciechowski finally got roughed up a bit surrendering 8 runs on 10 hits, including 3 home runs, as the RedHawks (25-18) lost to the Grizzlies 10-3. Philip Humber followed Wojo making his RedHawks debut and allowed 2 runs in his 2 innings of work. Sadly his 9.00 ERA is better than what he posted during his stint with the Astros (9.59). Fernando Martinez led the RedHawks offense by going 3 for 4 with a home run and a pair of rbis. Brandon Laird added two hits including a double.

AA - Midland 19 Corpus Christi 11

The Hooks (25-19) took an 11-10 lead into the bottom of the 8th, but the RockHounds scored 9 times off of 3 Hooks pitchers and won a wild, high scoring affair 19-11. Erik Castro, Michael Burgess and Zach Johnson all homered for the Hooks, and Castro and Burgess each had 3 rbis to lead the offense, but the Hooks made 4 errors, walked 9 hitters and allowed 17 hits. Pat Urckfitz was the lone bright spot on the mound for Corpus Christi tossing 2 2/3 scoreless innings.

Advanced A - Rancho Cucamonga 10 Lancaster 6

Tyson Perez allowed 7 runs in the game's first two innings and the JetHawks (24-20) never recovered losing to the Quakes, 10-6. Telvin Nash homered and drove in three runs, and Preston Tucker had 3 hits as Lancaster tried to rally late, but fell short. Chris Epps added two doubles and Joe Sclafani reached base 3 times while Theron Geith threw 2 scoreless innings.

Low A - Beloit 4 Quad Cities 1

Teoscar Hernandez led off the game with a single, and the River Bandits (23-20) went hitless the rest of the way falling to the Snappers, 4-1. Mike Hauschild tossed 5 no-hit innings for Quad Cities, but Beloit got to the River Bandits' bullpen for 4 runs on 7 hits. Rio Ruiz delivered a sacrifice fly to score Hernandez for Quad Cities' only run.

Down on the Farm - 4/28/13

AAA - Oklahoma City 5 New Orleans 3

Making his first appearance since his Major League debut last weekend with the Astros, Brett Oberholtzer earned his first win of the year going 5 innings and holding the Zephyrs to 2 runs on 6 hits.  The bullpen took it from there as Kevin Chapman, Josh Zeid and Jose Valdez carried the RedHawks (13-10) through the final four innings and they held on for a 5-3 win. Valdez earned the save giving him an organization-high 6 so far in 2013. Jonathan Villar had 2 hits for the 8th time in 9 games and added his first home run of the season while Marc Krauss added rbi number 23 to lead the offense.

AA - Frisco 4 Corpus Christi 3

Asher Wojciechowski proved he's human after surrendering a 7th inning Grand Slam and the Hooks (13-10) fell 4-3 to the RoughRiders. Wojciechowski had allowed just 2 runs all year prior that swing of the bat. David Martinez started the game for the Hooks and didn't allow a run in 5 shutout innings. The 25 year old Venezuelan's ERA is now at 1.19 on the year. George Springer led the Hooks offense with a pair of doubles as he raised his average to .306.

Advanced A - Inland Empire 12 Lancaster 7

The JetHawks (14-9) saw an early 4-0 lead evaporate in a hurry as the 66ers scored 12 times between the 4th and 7th innings. Matt Duffy continues to be a bright spot though as the third base prospect extended his hitting streak to 15 games. Duffy's only gone hitless in a game once this season. Andrew Aplin slugged a 3rd inning Grand Slam for the JetHawks and drove in 5. Zach Johnson added a pair of hits and his 10th double of the season.

Low A - Great Lakes 10 Quad Cities 6

Colton Cain was roughed up for 4 runs on 10 hits in 3 1/3 innings as the River Bandits (13-8) fell to the Loons 10-6. Austin Elkins and Miles Hamblin each had two hits for the Bandits as every starter with the exception of Carlos Correa had at least one hit in the loss. Correa did walk and get hit by two pitches in 5 trips though, scoring a pair of runs. The 2012 first overall pick is hitting just .200 on the year.

Down on the Farm - 4/27/13

AAA - Oklahoma City 11 New Orleans 1

Marc Krauss clubbed his team-leading 5th home run of the season, and Jordan Lyles had his best outing of the year allowing just 1 run in 5 innings of work as the RedHawks (12-10) buried the Zephyrs 11-1. Brett Wallace added his second homer since his demotion and Jonathan Villar, Trevor Crowe and Jake Elmore all had 2 RBIs in the rout.

AA - Corpus Christi 11 Frisco 0

The Hooks (13-9) scored 7 times in the first inning and blew out the RoughRiders 11-0. Enrique Hernandez had a 3-run triple in the first, and George Springer added his 7th home run of the season to lead the offensive explosion. Bobby Doran and Nick Tropeano combined on the 7-hit shutout with Doran improving to 3-0 on the year and Tropeano earning his 3rd save while fanning 7 in his 4 innings of work.

Advanced A - Inland Empire 10 Lancaster 7 (10 innings)

The JetHawks (14-8) bullpen faltered late allowing 7 runs between the 8th and 10th innings as the JetHawks were tripped up by the 66ers 10-7 in 10. Zach Johnson went 3 for 4 with 2 doubles and a homer to lead the JetHawk offense, and Telvin Nash extended his hitting streak to 5 while clubbing his 2nd homer of the year. Travis Ballew blew the save in the 9th, but did strike out 2 more hitters giving him 17 in 7 2/3 innings this year.

Low A - Quad Cities 3 Lansing 2

John Neely got Dwight Smith to ground into a force play with the bases loaded and two outs in the 9th to give the River Bandits (13-7) a 3-2 win over the Lugnuts. Lance McCullers didn't allow an earned run in 5 innings of work lowering his ERA to 1.93 on the year, but he was denied his first win of the season once again, leaving with the score tied at 1. Daniel Minor earned the win in relief with 6  strikeouts in three scoreless innings of work. The River Bandits managed just 3 hits in the win and took advantage of 4 Lansing errors to steal this one.

Down on the Farm - 4/19/13

AAA - Oklahoma City 5 Round Rock 2

Trevor Crowe had 2 more hits to extend his hitting streak to 13 games, and Jonathan Villar stayed hot with a double and a triple as the RedHawks (8-7) defeated the Express 5-2. Jordan Lyles started for Oklahoma City and scattered 6 hits over 4 2/3 innings while not walking a batter and allowing just 1 run. C.J. Fick earned the win by throwing 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief and Josh Zeid earned his first save of the season by getting the final four outs, three of them via strikeout. Fernando Martinez went 1 for 4 with an rbi double as he continued his rehab assignment.

AA - Corpus Christi 3 Frisco 2

A night after falling in 17 innings, the Hooks (8-6) got the job done in 9 beating the RoughRiders 3-2. Bobby Doran (2-0) started and threw 5 solid innings allowing just 1 run and fanning 6 to earn the win, while Nick Tropeano went the final 4 innings to earn his second save of the season. Michael Burgess, who'd driven in just 1 run all season, had the big blow with a 2-run double in the first. George Springer and Austin Wates each added a pair of hits.

Advanced A - Bakersfield 9 Lancaster 7

The Blaze used a pair of 4-run innings to outslug the JetHawks (9-6) by a score of 9-7. Nolan Fontana (.340) singled, tripled and drove in 3 runs, and Zach Johnson homered and drove in two more, but it wasn't enough. David Rollins (2-1) started and was charged with 8 earned runs in 4 2/3 innings of work as he suffered his first loss of the season.

Down on the Farm - 4/16/13 and 4/17/13

Missed a day, so here's some catching up:

Tuesday

AAA - Round Rock 8 Oklahoma City 6

Brett Oberholtzer took a 4-0 lead into the third, but was roughed up for a 5 run inning, and the RedHawks (6-6) never recovered falling 8-6 to the Express. Brandon Laird went 1 for 5 in his last game before getting called up to Houston, and Marc Krauss drove in a pair of runs to give him 13 on the year in a losing effort. Jake Elmore continued his hot hitting going 1 for 2 with 2 walks and was hit by a pitch. He also stole a pair of bases. Elmore is now 21 for 47 to start the season and has hit in 11 straight.

AA - Tulsa 9 Corpus Christi 3

Rene Garcia and George Springer hit home runs, but the Hooks (7-5) fell behind early and never recovered in a 9-3 loss to the Drillers. Austin Wates added two hits raising his average on the year to .341 in a losing effort. The game was still within reach until Matthew Heidenreich took the mound in the 6th. A 12 game winner last year, Heidenreich - acquired from the White Sox for Brett Myers - allowed 5 runs in just 1 1/3 innings of work raising his ERA on the year to 12.79.

Advanced A - High Desert 6 Lancaster 5 (11 innings)

The JetHawks (8-4) let a 5-0 lead slip away and eventually fell to the Mavericks 6-5 on a walkoff homer in the bottom of the 11th. Preston Tucker clubbed had 3 hits including his 4th home run of the season, and Drew Muren went 3 for 4 to lead the offense, but Lancaster was just 3 for 13 with runners in scoring position. Reliever Travis Ballew, a 23rd round pick in last year's draft pitched 2 perfect innings in which he struck out six. Ballew had a 1.62 ERA in 39 innings as a rookie.

Low A - Clinton 6 Quad Cities 3 (Game 1)

Lance McCullers gave up 6 runs (2 earned) in just 2 1/3 innings as the River Bandits lost Game 1 of their doubleheader with the LumberKings 6-3. The River Bandits drew 9 walks, but managed just two hits, doubles by Chase Davidson and Terrell Joyce. They also made 3 errors which would prove to be their undoing. Mitchell Lambson worked 3 2/3 scoreless innings in relief to keep the Bandits in the game.

Low A - Quad Cities 3 Clinton 2 (Game 2)

The River Bandits (8-3) rallied from a 2-0 deficit with 3 in the 5th to defeat the LumberKings 3-2 and split their doubleheader. Austin Elkins, making his first appearance of the season for the Bandits, drove in the first run, and Ryan Dineen followed that up with a 2-run double to put the Bandits up for good. Michael Dimock worked 3 perfect innings of relief, fanning 4, to earn his first win of the season.

Wednesday

Advanced A - Lancaster 9 High Desert 8

Zach Johnson drove in 4 and Nolan Fontana had a hit and three walks as the JetHawks jumped out to a big lead early and hung on late to improve to 9-4 on the year. Mike Foltynewicz started and went 4 innings allowing 3 runs (2 earned) on 4 hits, but left with a no decision. Blair Walters (2-0) earned the win in relief and Travis Ballew continued his solid form striking out 3 more hitters in the 9th to earn his 3rd save of the season. Ballew has 12 strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings of work this season.

Down on the Farm - 4/9/13

AAA - Oklahoma City 5 Nashville 3

Brandon Laird's second run scoring double of the game broke a 3-3 tie in the 8th as the RedHawks (4-2) knocked off the Sounds 5-3. Jake Elmore and Trevor Crowe each added 2 hits and an rbi in support of Ross Seaton who turned in a solid effort in his first AAA start of the year. Jordan Lyles earned the win in relief and Kevin Chapman recorded the final out for his first save of the year.

AA - Corpus Christi 6 Tulsa 0

Bobby Doran and Nick Tropeano combined on a 6-hit shutout as the Hooks (5-1) defeated the Drillers 6-0. Jiovanni Mier was 3 for 3 with a homer and 2 runs batter in, and Domingo Santana doubled three times off opposing starter Dan Houston and drove in a pair as well. Austin Wates and George Springer were each 2 for 5 with a pair of runs scored.

Advanced A - Lancaster 13 Lake Elsinore 8

Zach Johnson had 5 hits and drove in 4 runs missing the cycle by a home run as the JetHawks (4-1) broke out their hitting sticks and defeated the Storm 13-8. Nolan Fontana added 4 rbis of his own, and Drew Muren, Matt Duffy and Andrew Aplin all scored 3 runs in the win. Alex Gillingham earned the win with 5 solid innings of work in which he allowed just 2 runs.

Low A - Burlington 6 Quad Cities 4

The River Bandits (5-1) saw their 5 game winning streak snapped at the hands of the Burlington Bees, dropping a tough one 6-4. Carlos Correa was 1 for 2 with 3 walks, and Jesse Wierzbicki had a pair of hits to lead the River Bandit offense, but on the whole Quad Cities failed to capitalize on their opportunities stranding 13 runners with going 2 for 14 with runners in scoring position. Lance McCullers (0-1) allowed the go ahead run in the 8th and was saddled with the loss.
