Down on the Farm - 4/16/13 and 4/17/13

Missed a day, so here's some catching up:

Tuesday

AAA - Round Rock 8 Oklahoma City 6

Brett Oberholtzer took a 4-0 lead into the third, but was roughed up for a 5 run inning, and the RedHawks (6-6) never recovered falling 8-6 to the Express. Brandon Laird went 1 for 5 in his last game before getting called up to Houston, and Marc Krauss drove in a pair of runs to give him 13 on the year in a losing effort. Jake Elmore continued his hot hitting going 1 for 2 with 2 walks and was hit by a pitch. He also stole a pair of bases. Elmore is now 21 for 47 to start the season and has hit in 11 straight.

AA - Tulsa 9 Corpus Christi 3

Rene Garcia and George Springer hit home runs, but the Hooks (7-5) fell behind early and never recovered in a 9-3 loss to the Drillers. Austin Wates added two hits raising his average on the year to .341 in a losing effort. The game was still within reach until Matthew Heidenreich took the mound in the 6th. A 12 game winner last year, Heidenreich - acquired from the White Sox for Brett Myers - allowed 5 runs in just 1 1/3 innings of work raising his ERA on the year to 12.79.

Advanced A - High Desert 6 Lancaster 5 (11 innings)

The JetHawks (8-4) let a 5-0 lead slip away and eventually fell to the Mavericks 6-5 on a walkoff homer in the bottom of the 11th. Preston Tucker clubbed had 3 hits including his 4th home run of the season, and Drew Muren went 3 for 4 to lead the offense, but Lancaster was just 3 for 13 with runners in scoring position. Reliever Travis Ballew, a 23rd round pick in last year's draft pitched 2 perfect innings in which he struck out six. Ballew had a 1.62 ERA in 39 innings as a rookie.

Low A - Clinton 6 Quad Cities 3 (Game 1)

Lance McCullers gave up 6 runs (2 earned) in just 2 1/3 innings as the River Bandits lost Game 1 of their doubleheader with the LumberKings 6-3. The River Bandits drew 9 walks, but managed just two hits, doubles by Chase Davidson and Terrell Joyce. They also made 3 errors which would prove to be their undoing. Mitchell Lambson worked 3 2/3 scoreless innings in relief to keep the Bandits in the game.

Low A - Quad Cities 3 Clinton 2 (Game 2)

The River Bandits (8-3) rallied from a 2-0 deficit with 3 in the 5th to defeat the LumberKings 3-2 and split their doubleheader. Austin Elkins, making his first appearance of the season for the Bandits, drove in the first run, and Ryan Dineen followed that up with a 2-run double to put the Bandits up for good. Michael Dimock worked 3 perfect innings of relief, fanning 4, to earn his first win of the season.

Wednesday

Advanced A - Lancaster 9 High Desert 8

Zach Johnson drove in 4 and Nolan Fontana had a hit and three walks as the JetHawks jumped out to a big lead early and hung on late to improve to 9-4 on the year. Mike Foltynewicz started and went 4 innings allowing 3 runs (2 earned) on 4 hits, but left with a no decision. Blair Walters (2-0) earned the win in relief and Travis Ballew continued his solid form striking out 3 more hitters in the 9th to earn his 3rd save of the season. Ballew has 12 strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings of work this season.
