AAA - Albuquerque 4 Oklahoma City 2
Brandon Laird hit a 2-run homer in the first inning, but that was all the offense the RedHawks (31-24) could muster in a 4-2 defeat. Jonathan Villar had a pair of singles and a steal, and Brett Wallace and Fernando Martinez each had doubles, but Oklahoma City was just 1 for 8 with runners in scoring position in the game. Ross Seaton started and took the loss allowing all 4 Isotopes runs in 5 2/3 innings. Jason Stoffel continued his ridiculous run with 1 1/3 perfect innings in relief. His AAA ERA is now 1.53 and opposing hitters are batting just .119 against him in 13 appearances since his promotion.
AA - Corpus Christi 5 Arkansas 3 (8 innings, Game 1)
Jose Martinez returned from the DL and went 3 for 4 and Domingo Santana tripled, homered and scored three times as the Hooks (34-21) won game one of their doubleheader 5-3. Martinez hit a one out double in the 8th, Santana scored him with a triple and then crossed the plate himself on a sacrifice fly off the bat of George Springer. Mike Foltynewicz started the game on the mound and allowed just 1 run in 4 1/3 innings while fanning 5. Pat Urckfitz earned the win in relief with 2 scoreless innings to improve to 3-2 on the year.
Corpus Christi 13 Arkansas 9 (Game 2)
David Martinez was spotted a 10-0 lead after half an inning, but failed to improve to 9-0 on the year as he failed to get through 3 innings. Jose Martinez went 4 for 5, George Springer homered and drove in 5 runs and Domingo Santana hit his second home run of the day as the Hooks swept the doubleheader and improved to 35-21 on the year. Martinez, Springer and Ben Orloff all scored 3 times for the Hooks and Matt Heidenreich (3-3, 6.75) earned the win with 4 innings of solid relief.
Advanced A - Lancaster 16 Visalia 1
Chris Epps and MP Cokinos combined to go 6 for 9 with 3 doubles, 2 homers and 11 runs batted in as the JetHawks (35-21) crushed the Rawhide 16-1. Joe Sclafani went 2 for 2 with 3 walks, Brandon Meredith homered and Preston Tucker extended his hitting streak to 17 games while all 3 players scored 3 runs in the game. David Rollins improved to 5-3 on the year with 5 shutout innings and Tyson Perez earned the save by allowing just 1 run in his 4 innings of relief. Delino DeShields stole two bases to give him 14 on the year.
Low A - Quad Cities 3 Beloit 2
Lance McCullers Jr threw 5 shutout innings and earned his second win of the season while lowering his ERA on the year to 1.70 as the River Bandits hung on for a 3-2 win over the Snappers. Teoscar Hernandez and Jordan Scott each had 2 hits to lead the offense while Jonathan Singleton again showed his human side going 0 for 3 with a walk and a strikeout. Cameron Lamb got the final 2 outs for his 3rd save of the season.

Down on the Farm - 6/1/13
AAA - Oklahoma City 13 Albuquerque 10
The RedHawks (31-23) rallied for 6 runs in the 9th as they won a high scoring affair against the Isotopes 13-10. Brandon Laird, Fernando Martinez and Che-Hsuan Lin all homered for Oklahoma City while Jake Elmore, Brett Wallace and Carlos Perez paced an 18-hit attack with 3 hits apiece. All 9 RedHawks starters had at least one hit and a run scored. Brett Oberholtzer started the game for Oklahoma City and failed to make it through 4 innings of work allowing 7 runs on 9 hits in 3 2/3. Alex Sogard ended up earning the win, his first since his promotion, and Jose Valdez got the final out for his 12th save.
Advanced A - Lancaster 12 Visalia 3
Joe Sclafani continued his torrid hitting as he reached base 4 times, homered, and drove in 3 runs in the JetHawks' (34-21) 12-3 win over the Rawhide. Preston Tucker added his 11th home run of the season and drove in three more runs, Chris Epps homered and drove in two, and Brandon Meredith had 3 hits as Lancaster's offense continues to crank out runs. Brady Rodgers pitched 4 scoreless innings of relief and earned the win to improve to 5-1 on the year.
Low A - Beloit 10 Quad Cities 3
Jonathan Singleton finally went a game without homering as the River Bandits (30-24) got beaten up by the Snappers 10-3. Rio Ruiz doubled, homered, and drove in all 3 River Bandits runs and was one of the few bright spots on the day. Singleton was 0 for 3, but did walk and score a run. Vincent Velasquez was roughed up in relief surrendering 5 runs on 7 hits in just 1 1/3 innings as the Snappers put the game out of reach late.
Dominican Summer League - DSL Mariners 6 DSL Astros 0
The DSL Astros (0-1) dropped their season opener to the DSL Mariners 6-0. The game was scoreless heading into the 7th when the Mariners finally broke through and proceeded to score in each of the game's final three innings. 18 year old Elieser Hernandez tossed 5 shutout innings and third baseman Randy Cesar went 2 for 4 to lead the offense.

AAA - Iowa 5 Oklahoma City 4
Brad Peacock struck out 8 in 5 2/3 innings, but allowed 5 runs on 4 hits and 4 walks as the RedHawks (27-20) fell to the Cubs 5-4. Jonathan Villar and Brandon Laird each had solo home runs and Marc Krauss reached base three times (single, 2 walks) to supply to RedHawks offense. Josh Zeid and Alex Sogard combined to throw 2 1/3 scoreless innings out of the pen. Sogard has yet to allow a run since his promotion to AAA spanning 5 innings. He's allowed just 1 hit, but has issued 5 walks. His ERA on the year between AA and AAA is now 0.51.
AA - Corpus Christi 2 Northwest Arkansas 0
Mike Foltynewicz pitched 5 no-hit innings, and David Martinez only allowed a lead off single in the 6th as the Hooks (28-19) completely neutralized the Naturals, winning 2-0 on a combined 1-hitter. Folty now owns a 0.86 ERA in 21 AA innings and the Texas League is batting just .145 against him. Martinez, meanwhile, is no slouch either improving to 8-0 and lowering his ERA on the year to 1.84. Martinez needs just one win to tie his career high set in 2012 with Lancaster. The Hooks got their offense from Rene Garcia (2/4 with a double and an rbi) and Jonathan Meyer (1/4 with an rbi). George Springer drew a pair of walks in 4 trips and Max Stassi extended his hitting streak to 10 games with his 6th double of the season.
Advanced A - Lancaster 12 Inland Empire 4
The JetHawks (27-20) jumped out to an 8-1 lead through three innings and cruised to a 12-4 win over the 66ers. Andrew Aplin led the offense by going 3 for 4 with a home run and 4 runs batted in. He leads all Astros minor leaguers with 42 rbis this season. Tyler Heineman, Brandon Meredith and Joe Sclafani all had 3 hits in the game and Preston Tucker added his 7th home run of the year. Chris Devenski started and improved to 4-2 on the year despite his 6.99 ERA and Brady Rodgers earned his first save of the season with 4 scoreless innings of relief in which he allowed 2 hits and fanned 3.

Pinch-runner Teoscar Hernandez scored the go-ahead run on a passed ball in the bottom of the 8th as the River Bandits (24-22) edged out the Timber Rattlers, 4-3. Carlos Correa was 2 for 4 with 2 rbis, a triple, a stolen base and a run to lead the Bandits offense. Rio Ruiz added an rbi. Lance McCullers turned in another solid outing allowing just 2 earned runs in 5 innings of work, but despite his 1.94 ERA, he remains winless in 11 appearances including 7 starts. Daniel Minor pitched 4 scoreless innings in relief of McCullers to earn the win. He allowed just 2 singles and fanned 5 while not walking a batter.

Marc Krauss, Fernando Martinez and Brett Wallace all homered and Wallace drove in 5 runs. Brandon Laird added 3 hits including a double to back the solid outing from Oberholtzer.

Preston Tucker's bases loaded, 1-out single scored Carlos Perdomo as the JetHawks (25-20) walked off with a 13-12 win over Rancho Cucamonga. Andrew Aplin homered and drove in 4 runs, Tucker finished with 4 hits, Joe Sclafani went 3 for 5 to raise his average to .405 since his promotion, and Chris Epps had 2 doubles and 3 rbis as the JetHawks banged out 19 hits in their win. Travis Ballew pitched a 1-2-3 9th inning with a pair of strikeouts to earn his second win of the season.

Asher Wojciechowski finally got roughed up a bit surrendering 8 runs on 10 hits, including 3 home runs, as the RedHawks (25-18) lost to the Grizzlies 10-3. Philip Humber followed Wojo making his RedHawks debut and allowed 2 runs in his 2 innings of work. Sadly his 9.00 ERA is better than what he posted during his stint with the Astros (9.59). Fernando Martinez led the RedHawks offense by going 3 for 4 with a home run and a pair of rbis. Brandon Laird added two hits including a double.
AA - Midland 19 Corpus Christi 11
The Hooks (25-19) took an 11-10 lead into the bottom of the 8th, but the RockHounds scored 9 times off of 3 Hooks pitchers and won a wild, high scoring affair 19-11. Erik Castro, Michael Burgess and Zach Johnson all homered for the Hooks, and Castro and Burgess each had 3 rbis to lead the offense, but the Hooks made 4 errors, walked 9 hitters and allowed 17 hits. Pat Urckfitz was the lone bright spot on the mound for Corpus Christi tossing 2 2/3 scoreless innings.

Telvin Nash homered and drove in three runs, and Preston Tucker had 3 hits as Lancaster tried to rally late, but fell short. Chris Epps added two doubles and Joe Sclafani reached base 3 times while Theron Geith threw 2 scoreless innings.

Brett Oberholtzer (2-3, 6.08) allowed just 1 hit in 5 2/3 shutout innings, fanning 9 and combined with 4 relievers on a 4-hit shutout as the RedHawks (22-12) defeated the Rainiers 1-0. Brett Wallace tripled and scored the game's only run on Brandon Laird's rbi double in the 4th and the RedHawks pitching staff took care of the rest. Jose Valdez earned his 9th save of the season by pitching a scoreless 9th.
AA - Corpus Christi 9 Frisco 4
Bobby Doran improved to 5-0 on the year and Domingo Santana bashed 3 home runs and drove in 5 as the Hooks (20-14) defeated the RoughRiders 9-4. Santana homered in the 1st, 3rd and 7th innings to back a solid start from Nick Tropeano who allowed just an unearned run on two hits in 4 innings. Drew Muren and Rene Garcia each added a pair of hits, and Jiovanni Mier and Zach Johnson both homered as well. Johnson's home run was his first since his promotion to AA.

The JetHawks (20-15) finished with 16 hits and 11 walks as pitching was nowhere to be found in a wild 19-13 affair. Every JetHawks starter except Nolan Fontana had at least 1 hit, and Fontana managed to draw 3 walks. Telvin Nash was the hero on a day of offensive heroes as he homered twice and drove in 7 runs. Andrew Aplin added 4 rbis, MP Cokinos and Chris Epps each drove in 3, and Matt Duffy added his 5th home run of the year.
Low A - Cedar Rapids 2 Quad Cities 0 (Game 1, 11 innings)
Josh Fields started his rehab going 2 scoreless innings and fanning 3, but the River Bandits (19-12) lost to the Kernels 2-0 in 11. Quad Cities managed just 6 hits in the game, 3 of them by left fielder Jordan Scott. Jamaine Cotton made his 2013 debut with 4 scoreless innings in relief of Fields and Carlos Correa returned to the Bandits lineup but went 0 for 3 with a walk.

The River Bandits (19-13) capped off a frustrating double header with a 5-1 loss at the hands of the Kernels. Vincent Velasquez struck out 9, but allowed 5 runs on 9 hits in 4 2/3 inninngs. Roberto Pena scored the Bandits only run of the game in the the inning on a Jordan Scott sacrifice fly.

Astros Reshuffle Deck Again
Rick Ankiel, Fernando Martinez and Brandon Laird are all out, and J.D. Martinez, Jimmy Paredes and newcomer Trevor Crowe are in as the Astros shook things up a bit following their 4-game sweep at the hands of the Tigers. None of the moves come as a big surprise as all three of the players on the outs had struggled offensively. Ankiel was hitting just .194 with 35 strikeouts in 62 at bats, F-Mart was 6 for 33 with 12 strikeouts, and Laird was 7 for 35 with 13 strikeouts. The three did combine for 9 of Houston's 30 home runs, but they were few and far between, and given all of Houston's struggles, the inability to put the ball in play and/or get on base, just wasn't good enough. For Ankiel and F-Mart, it may be the end of the line, as both players were designated for assignment and could get claimed by other teams. For Laird, he'll had back to AAA where he'll hope to build on his early season success that saw him hitting .353 and earned him a call-up. I'll be honest, I liked all three of them, but the numbers don't lie, and so we move on. Here's a quick look at our two new call-ups. No need to reintroduce J.D. Martinez who hit .300 (6/20) in his rehab stint with Corpus Christi.
Jimmy Paredes
Paredes came to Houston in the Lance Berkman trade and debuted for Houston in 2011, so he's no stranger to Astro fans. After hitting .286 as a rookie in 2011, he spent most of 2012 in AAA before a late season call-up in which he hit just .189 (14/74). After hitting just .120 (3/25) this spring, Paredes found himself back in AAA, but he's absolutely raked for the RedHawks this year. In 30 games he has 41 hits, has dramatically cut down on the strikeouts and increased his walks (131/24 in 2011, 122/28 in 2012, 19/14 in 2013), and he's hitting at a .366 clip. Trevor Crowe

He reached the Majors in 2009 and even played 122 games and hit .251 in 2010, but he appeared in just 15 games in 2011 following shoulder surgery, and spent all of 2012 in the minors before the Astros took a flyer on him this year. A versatile outfielder with great speed, Crowe is off to a solid start with Oklahoma City hitting .307 in 30 games with 21 runs, 17 walks and 11 stolen bases. He's never hit for a ton of power (he homered a career high 9 times in 2008), but he'll hit you some doubles and triples. Another switch hitter, like Paredes, Crowe gives the Astros even more versatility off the bench. Now 29, Crowe isn't exactly a prospect, but on this team, anyone who can get a job done deserves a spot. Might as well see what he can do.
Jimmy Paredes
Paredes came to Houston in the Lance Berkman trade and debuted for Houston in 2011, so he's no stranger to Astro fans. After hitting .286 as a rookie in 2011, he spent most of 2012 in AAA before a late season call-up in which he hit just .189 (14/74). After hitting just .120 (3/25) this spring, Paredes found himself back in AAA, but he's absolutely raked for the RedHawks this year. In 30 games he has 41 hits, has dramatically cut down on the strikeouts and increased his walks (131/24 in 2011, 122/28 in 2012, 19/14 in 2013), and he's hitting at a .366 clip.
