A look at what the trades of the last few seasons have netted us:
Roy Oswalt, Pedro Feliz and Brandon Lyon turned into SS Jonathan Villar, 1B Brett Wallace, RHP Asher Wojciechowski, LHP David Rollins, RHP Joe Musgrove, C Carlos Perez, RHP Kevin Comer and LHP Theron Geith. Ok, so this is a series of trades that put together netted us 8 prospects. First, Roy Oswalt was traded to the Phillies for J.A. Happ, Villar, and outfielder Anthony Gose. The Astros then immediately flipped Gose to the Blue Jays for Wallace. Fast forward to last year and Happ gets packaged with Lyon and Carpenter (acquired for Pedro Feliz in 2010) to Toronto for Wojo, Rollins, Musgrove, Perez, Comer, Ben Francisco and Francisco Cordero. And then Francisco gets sent to Tampa Bay for Geith. So if you're keeping score, Houston got 5 of their current top 20 prospects (Villar-12, Wojo-15, Comer-17, Musgrove-19 and Perez-20), Brett Wallace who's currently hitting .315 for the RedHawks, David Rollins who has a respectable 3.96 ERA and nearly a strikeout per inning for Lancaster, and Geith who's 5-0 with a 2.35 ERA in 17 games for the JetHawks. Not a bad haul.
Lance Berkman and Fernando Rodriguez turned into UT Jimmy Paredes, RHP Kyle Weiland, 1B/OF Chris Carter, RHP Brad Peacock and C Max Stassi. This was another series of trades on top of trades. Berkman was moved to the Yankees for Mark Melancon and Paredes. After a year as the Astros closer, Melancon was traded to the Red Sox for Jed Lowrie and Kyle Weiland. Lowrie was then packaged with Fernando Rodriguez to the A's for Peacock, Carter and Stassi. Paredes and Carter are currently every day players for the Astros, Peacock was in the Opening Day Starting Rotation, Weiland was in the Opening Day Rotation a year ago before getting hurt and Stassi is currently ranked #16 among Astros prospects while hitting .286 with 9 doubles in 19 games for the Hooks.
Hunter Pence turned into 1B Jonathan Singleton, RHP Jarred Cosart, RHP Josh Zeid and RF Domingo Santana.
As Cosart (#4 Prospect) and Singleton (#1 Prospect) get closer to contributing to the Astros this trade looks better and better, but the afterthoughts in this deal have been producing as well. Zeid is 3-0 in 21 games for Oklahoma City, has 27 strikeouts in 22 1/3 innings and is holding opposing hitters to a .189 average. And then Santana, just 20 years old, is an intriguing blend of speed and power who homered 23 times and drove in 97 runs for the JetHawks last year. In 2013 he has 9 homers including a 3-homer game and 6 steals for the Hooks. He's currently ranked 13th among Astros prospects.
Michael Bourn turned into RHP Paul Clemens and LHP Brett Oberholtzer. Juan Abreu and Jordan Schafer didn't pan out, but Paul Clemens has become a mainstay in the Astros pen this year, and Oberholtzer made his Major League debut against the Indians in April.
Chris Johnson turned into 3B Bobby Borchering and 1B/OF Marc Krauss. Borchering hasn't played a game yet in 2013, but Krauss has has posted a .402 on base percentage in his first full year of AAA with 8 homers and 31 runs batted in.
Carlos Lee turned into 3B Matt Dominguez and RHP John Ely. Lee went to the Marlins for Dominguez and lefty pitcher Rob Rasmussen and then Rasmussen was sent to L.A. for Ely. Ely unfortunately went down with an arm injury after just one appearance this year (4 scoreless innings and a save), but Dominguez has solidified himself as one of baseball's best defensive third basemen and he's shown some power to boot.
Jeff Keppinger turned into RHP Henry Sosa and RHP Jason Stoffel. Sosa's still pitching in Korea, but Stoffel has been lights out in 2013 allowing just 7 hits in 16 1/3 innings since his promotion to AAA. His combined ERA between Corpus Christi and Oklahoma City is 1.52.
Wilton Lopez turned into RHP Alex White and RHP Alex Gillingham. Both Alex's are out with injuries as White made the team, but was hurt in the final scrimmage before Opening Day and Gillingham appeared in just 3 games for Lancaster before going down himself.
Wandy Rodriguez turned into CF Robbie Grossman, LHP Rudy Owens and LHP Colton Cain. Grossman got his first AAA action this year, and logged 28 games for the Astros following injuries to Justin Maxwell and J.D. Martinez. He only hit .198 for Houston, but he showed an ability to draw walks (16). The 18th ranked prospect in the Astros organization has been rock solid for the RedHawks hitting .299 with a .432 on base percentage. Owens, like Ely, was the victim to an early season arm injury and logged only 4 appearances for the RedHawks this year in which he posted a 3.71 ERA before getting shut down for the year. Cain has struggled a bit this year going 2-5 with a 5.85 ERA for Quad Cities, but he's 2-2 with a 1.96 ERA in his last 6 appearances.
Jason Bourgeois and Humberto Quintero turned into Kevin Chapman. Chapman posted a 2.64 ERA in 49 appearances for the Hooks in 2012, but he's struggled a bit with his control in 2013 walking 18 hitters in 22 innings. He has a 4.09 ERA, but opposing hitters are batting just .203 against him.

Down on the Farm - 5/31/13
AA - Arkansas 5 Corpus Christi 3
The Hooks (33-21) suffered a rare loss at the hands of the Arkansas Travelers, 5-3. George Springer hit a pair of doubles, Drew Muren had 3 hits, and Max Stassi scored a pair of runs, but the Hooks bullpen faltered allowing runs in the 6th, 7th and 8th innings. Bobby Doran started the game for the Hooks, but got a no-decision despite allowing just 1 run on 2 hits in 5 innings of work. The Hooks were just 1 for 13 with runners in scoring position in the loss and left 12 men on base.
Advanced A - Visalia 12 Lancaster 10
The Rawhide scored 8 times in the 4th inning and held on late as they snapped Lancaster's 9-game winning streak in a wild 12-10 affair. Lancaster (33-21) got homers from Brandon Meredith and Matt Duffy and 3 hits apiece from Duffy and Andrew Aplin, but couldn't overcome the big 4th inning. Jonas Dufek allowed 6 runs in just a third of an inning to take the loss. Aaron West pitched well out of the pen though fanning 6 and allowing just a run on 3 hits in 4 innings of work. Joe Sclafani went 2 for 3 with a pair of walks and scored 3 times to raise his average to .367 while Preston Tucker added a pair of rbis to give him 52 on the year.
Low A - Quad Cities 6 Beloit 3 (14 innings)
Jonathan Singleton started the night 0 for 5 with 3 strikeouts, but ended the night a hero as his 14th inning 2-run homer helped the River Bandits (30-23) to an extra inning win over the Snappers. Singleton's homer was his third in as many games for Quad Cities. Carlos Correa added 3 hits and an rbi to raise his average on the year to .292. The River Bandits got solid pitching from Jordan Jankowski (5 IP 1 ER), Cameron Lamb (3 scoreless innings) and Gerardo Sanchez (4 scoreless innings, 6 Ks) in the win. John Neely got the final two outs for his 9th save.

AA - Corpus Christi 5 Northwest Arkansas 4
Max Stassi had 2 doubles and 2 rbis and Erik Castro added 3 hits of his own as the Hooks (32-20) edged out the Naturals 5-4. Ruben Alaniz earned the win out of the pen with 3 solid innings of work to improve to 2-5 on the year while former Astro Sergio Escalona continues to work his way back after missing all of 2012 with 2 innings of work in which he allowed 1 run and fanned two to earn his first save. The Hooks had 12 hits in the game including 7 doubles.
Advanced A - Lancaster 9 Rancho Cucamonga 4
Preston Tucker homered again and Telvin Nash homered twice as the JetHawks (32-20) erased an early deficit and defeated the Quakes 9-4. Tucker and Nash each drove in 3 runs in the game and 6 different JetHawks players had multi-hit games led by Matt Duffy's 3 hits and 2 rbis. David Rollins worked 4 hitless innings in relief to earn his 4th win of the season.
Low A - Quad Cities 2 Kane County 1
Jonathan Singleton homered for the second time in as many games and also ripped a double as the River Bandits (29-23) won a close one over the Cougars 2-1. Teoscar Hernandez added a solo home run while Rio Ruiz (2/4) and Austin Elkins (2/3) each had multi-hit games for the River Bandits. Mike Hauschild worked 5 shutout innings of 1-hit ball, but it was Colton Cain who had 3 shutout innings of his own earning the win. John Neely worked the 9th for his 8th save.

AAA - Iowa 7 Oklahoma City 3
Wojo suffered a second straight defeat for the RedHawks allowing 4 earned runs on 7 hits in 5 1/3 innings as Oklahoma City (27-21) fell to the Cubs, 7-3. Brett Wallace drove in all three RedHawks runs with his 8th home run of the season and an rbi groundout. Marc Krauss added two singles and a walk, and Cody Clark went 2 for 4 with a run scored. Former Astros Brian Bogusevic (3/5, rbi) and Edwin Maysonet (2/4, HR, 2 rbi) enjoyed solid games for the Cubs. Bogusevic is hitting .364 on the year.

Ruben Alaniz earned his first win of 2013 as the Hooks (29-19) upended the Travelers 10-3. Alaniz (1-5, 5.17) pitched 5 solid innings allowing just 2 runs and the Hooks got 2 rbis apiece from George Springer, Max Stassi and Enrique Hernandez. Stassi finished the game 1 for 3 with a double to extend his hitting streak to 11 games. Sergio Escalona made his 2013 debut and worked an inning allowing a solo home run to Randal Grichuk and striking out one.
Advanced A - Lancaster 5 Inland Empire 1
Lancaster scored runs on a balk, a wild pitch, an error and a passed ball as the JetHawks (28-20) defeated the 66ers 5-1. Andrew Aplin doubled, drew 2 walks, stole a base, and drove in his 43rd run of the year to lead the offense. The JetHawks pen pitched 5 no-hit innings, highlighted by 3 innings from Tyson Perez. Perez struck out 4 and earned the win to improve to 2-3 and lower his ERA on the year to 7.36.
Low A - Clinton 1 Quad Cities 0 (Game 1)
Colton Cain (1-5, 6.32) pitched well allowing just 1 run in 4 2/3 innings, but the River Bandits (24-23) were limited to just 4 hits in a 1-0 loss. Jordan Scott had 2 of Quad Cities' 4 hits in the game, and Richard Rodriguez threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings in relief of Cain.

The River Bandits (25-23) rallied from a 5-0 deficit and edged out the LumberKings 6-5 despite only getting 3 hits. Clinton pitchers walked 11 hitters and their defense made 3 errors as Quad Cities was able to salvage a split in the doubleheader. Miles Hamblin had 2 of the 3 hits for Quad Cities and drove in 3 runs while Jordan Scott and Teoscar Hernandez each scored twice. Carlos Correa added a double and a pair of walks. Mike Hauschild started and went 5 innings to earn the win and improve to 3-0, and Cameron Lamb pitched 2 scoreless innings to earn his second save.

Down on the Farm - 5/24/13

Brad Peacock struck out 8 in 5 2/3 innings, but allowed 5 runs on 4 hits and 4 walks as the RedHawks (27-20) fell to the Cubs 5-4. Jonathan Villar and Brandon Laird each had solo home runs and Marc Krauss reached base three times (single, 2 walks) to supply to RedHawks offense. Josh Zeid and Alex Sogard combined to throw 2 1/3 scoreless innings out of the pen. Sogard has yet to allow a run since his promotion to AAA spanning 5 innings. He's allowed just 1 hit, but has issued 5 walks. His ERA on the year between AA and AAA is now 0.51.

Mike Foltynewicz pitched 5 no-hit innings, and David Martinez only allowed a lead off single in the 6th as the Hooks (28-19) completely neutralized the Naturals, winning 2-0 on a combined 1-hitter. Folty now owns a 0.86 ERA in 21 AA innings and the Texas League is batting just .145 against him. Martinez, meanwhile, is no slouch either improving to 8-0 and lowering his ERA on the year to 1.84. Martinez needs just one win to tie his career high set in 2012 with Lancaster. The Hooks got their offense from Rene Garcia (2/4 with a double and an rbi) and Jonathan Meyer (1/4 with an rbi). George Springer drew a pair of walks in 4 trips and Max Stassi extended his hitting streak to 10 games with his 6th double of the season.
Advanced A - Lancaster 12 Inland Empire 4
The JetHawks (27-20) jumped out to an 8-1 lead through three innings and cruised to a 12-4 win over the 66ers. Andrew Aplin led the offense by going 3 for 4 with a home run and 4 runs batted in. He leads all Astros minor leaguers with 42 rbis this season. Tyler Heineman, Brandon Meredith and Joe Sclafani all had 3 hits in the game and Preston Tucker added his 7th home run of the year. Chris Devenski started and improved to 4-2 on the year despite his 6.99 ERA and Brady Rodgers earned his first save of the season with 4 scoreless innings of relief in which he allowed 2 hits and fanned 3.

Pinch-runner Teoscar Hernandez scored the go-ahead run on a passed ball in the bottom of the 8th as the River Bandits (24-22) edged out the Timber Rattlers, 4-3. Carlos Correa was 2 for 4 with 2 rbis, a triple, a stolen base and a run to lead the Bandits offense. Rio Ruiz added an rbi. Lance McCullers turned in another solid outing allowing just 2 earned runs in 5 innings of work, but despite his 1.94 ERA, he remains winless in 11 appearances including 7 starts. Daniel Minor pitched 4 scoreless innings in relief of McCullers to earn the win. He allowed just 2 singles and fanned 5 while not walking a batter.

Down on the Farm - 5/23/13
AAA - Fresno 4 Oklahoma City 1
Jarred Cosart logged a quality start, but the RedHawks bats were silent as they fell to Fresno by a score of 4-1. Brett Wallace reached base 4 times (2 singles, 2 walks) and raised his average since his demotion to .319, and Austin Wates added a pair of doubles and drove in the only run for the RedHawks (27-19), but they were about the only bright spots on offense. Philip Humber made his second appearance for the RedHawks, but struggled to find the strike zone and walked 2 of the 4 hitters he faced and hit a third before getting relieved by Kevin Chapman.
AA - Corpus Christi 10 Northwest Arkansas 4
Bobby Doran improved his record to 6-1 as the Hooks (27-19) cruised to a 10-4 win over the Naturals. Jonathan Meyer homered and drove in 4 and Max Stassi hit a pair of doubles and drove in 3 to lead the 13-hit attack. Stassi has now hit in 9 straight and he's 13 for 34 during that stretch raising his average on the year to .306. Nick Tropeano pitched the final four innings to earn his 5th save of the season.
Advanced A - Lancaster 8 Inland Empire 7
In a sloppy game featuring 8 errors, 18 strikeouts and 3 wild pitches, the JetHawks (26-20) edged out the 66ers 8-7. Carlos Perdomo and Preston Tucker each drove in a pair of runs and 8 different JetHawks scored at least once in the win. Delino DeShields Jr. entered the game as a defensive substitution and added a pair of stolen bases. Theron Geith (5-0, 2.29) earned the win with a scoreless 8th inning and Travis Ballew closed it out with a scoreless 9th for his 8th save.
Low A - Wisconsin 7 Quad Cities 4
Quad Cities (23-22) didn't get a hit until Terrell Joyce's home run to lead off the 7th inning and their late rally came up short as they were defeated 7-4 by the Timber Rattlers. Roberto Pena added a 2-run double and Carlos Correa drew a pair of walks and scored a run in a losing effort. Vincent Velasquez worked the final 4 innings and allowed just one hit while fanning 8.

Brett Wallace reached base 4 times (2 singles, 2 walks) and raised his average since his demotion to .319, and Austin Wates added a pair of doubles and drove in the only run for the RedHawks (27-19), but they were about the only bright spots on offense. Philip Humber made his second appearance for the RedHawks, but struggled to find the strike zone and walked 2 of the 4 hitters he faced and hit a third before getting relieved by Kevin Chapman.
AA - Corpus Christi 10 Northwest Arkansas 4
Bobby Doran improved his record to 6-1 as the Hooks (27-19) cruised to a 10-4 win over the Naturals. Jonathan Meyer homered and drove in 4 and Max Stassi hit a pair of doubles and drove in 3 to lead the 13-hit attack. Stassi has now hit in 9 straight and he's 13 for 34 during that stretch raising his average on the year to .306. Nick Tropeano pitched the final four innings to earn his 5th save of the season.
Advanced A - Lancaster 8 Inland Empire 7
In a sloppy game featuring 8 errors, 18 strikeouts and 3 wild pitches, the JetHawks (26-20) edged out the 66ers 8-7. Carlos Perdomo and Preston Tucker each drove in a pair of runs and 8 different JetHawks scored at least once in the win. Delino DeShields Jr. entered the game as a defensive substitution and added a pair of stolen bases. Theron Geith (5-0, 2.29) earned the win with a scoreless 8th inning and Travis Ballew closed it out with a scoreless 9th for his 8th save.
Low A - Wisconsin 7 Quad Cities 4
Quad Cities (23-22) didn't get a hit until Terrell Joyce's home run to lead off the 7th inning and their late rally came up short as they were defeated 7-4 by the Timber Rattlers. Roberto Pena added a 2-run double and Carlos Correa drew a pair of walks and scored a run in a losing effort. Vincent Velasquez worked the final 4 innings and allowed just one hit while fanning 8.

Down on the Farm - 5/17/13
AAA - Sacramento 4 Oklahoma City 2
Andrew Simunic and Che-Hsuan Lin each had 2 hits, a double and an rbi, but the rest of the RedHawks (24-16) squad managed just 3 hits as they came up short against Sacramento, 4-2. Jonathan Villar did record his 14th stolen base of the year, but Oklahoma City's 3-4-5 hitters - Brett Wallace, Brandon Laird, and Fernando Martinez - combined to go 0 for 12 with 3 strikeouts. Ross Seaton (0-4, 9.32) failed to retire a hitter in the 5th inning and was charged with all 4 runs in the loss. Both Kevin Chapman and Jason Stoffel tossed 2 scoreless innings in relief.

Jake Buchanan's days in AA have to be numbered. The 23 year old former 8th round pick out of N.C. State tossed 5 more scoreless innings - his 5th straight scoreless appearance totaling 22 2/3 innings - lowering his ERA on the year to 0.93 and improving to 4-0. Buchanan has allowed just 3 walks and 28 hits in 48 1/3 innings on the season and opposing hitters are batting just .163 against him. In 30 appearances last year between AA and AAA, Buchanan managed just a 5.25 ERA and opponents hit .320. Josh Fields continued his successful rehab with another scoreless inning, and Pat Urckfitz earned his first save of the season by recording the final four outs. Max Stassi provided the offense with an rbi double, as the Hooks (24-17) escaped with a 1-0 win.

Cruz tossed 5 shutout innings allowing just two hits, but Hallock was roughed up in a 4-run 7th. Travis Ballew finished the game off with a scoreless 9th for his 7th save. MP Cokinos homered and drove in 2 while Delino DeShields Jr reached base four times (2 singles, 2 walks), drove in two runs, and stole two bases to lead the offense. Telvin Nash and Preston Tucker each added a pair of hits as well.

Jordan Jankowski struck out a season high 7 in 4 innings of relief, but Brian Holmes allowed a pair of solo home runs in his 4 innings, and that was more the River Bandits offense could overcome.

AAA - Oklahoma City 9 Nashville 1
Jonathan Villar had a monster game for the RedHawks going 4 for 4 with 5 Rbis to lead Oklahoma City (17-10) to a 7th straight win. Jimmy Paredes added 3 hits of his own to raise his average to .376, and recently promoted Carlos Perez drove in a pair as the RedHawks erased an early 1-0 deficit with 9 unanswered runs. Asher Wojciechowski made his AAA debut by striking out 5 in 4 innings and allowed just 1 run. He was followed by C.J. Fick, Jason Stoffel, Josh Zeid and Jose Valdez who combined to throw 5 scoreless innings in relief.

David Martinez improved to 3-0 with 5 scoreless innings lowering his ERA on the year to a minuscule 0.98, as Corpus Christi (16-11) defeated the RockHounds 6-1. While Martinez handled the pitching, his battery mate Max Stassi handled the offense as the final piece of the Jed Lowrie trade debuted with a 2-run homer. Austin Wates had 2 hits, 2 runs and 2 steals and J.D. Martinez added an rbi double for the Hooks.

Brady Rodgers allowed just 1 hit in 5 innings and the JetHawks (16-10) hung on late to defeat the 66ers 5-4. Nolan Fontana and Preston Tucker led the offense with 2 hits apiece and Delino DeShields Jr. scored a pair of runs while closer Travis Ballew got the final 5 outs for his 4th save of the year.
Low A - South Bend 6 Quad Cities 4
Jesse Wierzbicki hit his 3rd homer of the season, and Ryan Dineen drew 4 walks for the second time in 3 games, but it wasn't enough as the Silver Hawks edged out the River Bandits (15-10) by a score of 6-4. Colton Cain fell to 0-3 on the year when he surrendered a pair of runs in the bottom of the 8th. Cain's struggles continued as this performance actually lowered his ERA on the year to 11.12.
