AAA - Albuquerque 10 Oklahoma City 2
3 RedHawks errors led to 4 unearned runs and Philip Humber lost for the 9th time this year as the Isotopes hammered the RedHawks (32-25) 10-2. Jake Elmore went 2 for 5 and Brett Wallace went 3 for 4, but the RedHawks left 12 men on base in the game. Humber allowed just 2 earned runs in 4 2/3 innings of work, but hit two more batters giving him 6 hit batsmen in 12 innings since he was sent down. Kevin Chapman struck out the side while working a scoreless inning.
AA - Corpus Christi 9 Midland 5
Jake Buchanan improved to 7-0 on the year, but the bigger story was that he actually got scored on... TWICE. While just one of the runs was earned, Buchanan's ERA skyrocketed to... 0.85. The Hooks (36-21) got big offensive efforts from Ben Orloff (4/5), Jose Martinez (3/5, 3 RBI) and Domingo Santana (2/5, 2 RBI) in the win. Martinez is 10 for 14 for the Hooks since he was activated from the DL. Justin Maxwell started as the DH in his first rehab appearance since his injury. He went 0 for 3 with a strikeout, but stole a base and scored a run.
Advanced A - Stockton 4 Lancaster 2
For the second day in a row, the Ports handed the JetHawks (35-23) a 4-2 loss. Andrew Aplin and Chris Epps each had 2 hits, but all six RedHawks hits were singles and they never really got much going offensively. Aaron West allowed 3 runs in 5 innings to fall to 2-2 on the year. Michael Dimock added 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Dimock did allow a hit which was the first he'd surrendered since his promotion to Lancaster. Opposing hitters are batting just .048 against him in the California League.
Dominican Summer League - DSL Astros 2 DSL Red Sox 0
Edwin Villarroel tossed 5 shutout innings, and Joselo Pinales and Harold Arauz combined for 4 shutout innings of relief as the DSL Astros 4-hit the DSL Red Sox 2-0. Arturo Michelena drove in a run on a groundout in the first and Hector Roa tripled and scored on a Jesus Bermejo single in the 7th, but that was more than enough for the Astros as they won their second straight.

Down on the Farm - 6/1/13
AAA - Oklahoma City 13 Albuquerque 10
The RedHawks (31-23) rallied for 6 runs in the 9th as they won a high scoring affair against the Isotopes 13-10. Brandon Laird, Fernando Martinez and Che-Hsuan Lin all homered for Oklahoma City while Jake Elmore, Brett Wallace and Carlos Perez paced an 18-hit attack with 3 hits apiece. All 9 RedHawks starters had at least one hit and a run scored. Brett Oberholtzer started the game for Oklahoma City and failed to make it through 4 innings of work allowing 7 runs on 9 hits in 3 2/3. Alex Sogard ended up earning the win, his first since his promotion, and Jose Valdez got the final out for his 12th save.
Advanced A - Lancaster 12 Visalia 3
Joe Sclafani continued his torrid hitting as he reached base 4 times, homered, and drove in 3 runs in the JetHawks' (34-21) 12-3 win over the Rawhide. Preston Tucker added his 11th home run of the season and drove in three more runs, Chris Epps homered and drove in two, and Brandon Meredith had 3 hits as Lancaster's offense continues to crank out runs. Brady Rodgers pitched 4 scoreless innings of relief and earned the win to improve to 5-1 on the year.
Low A - Beloit 10 Quad Cities 3
Jonathan Singleton finally went a game without homering as the River Bandits (30-24) got beaten up by the Snappers 10-3. Rio Ruiz doubled, homered, and drove in all 3 River Bandits runs and was one of the few bright spots on the day. Singleton was 0 for 3, but did walk and score a run. Vincent Velasquez was roughed up in relief surrendering 5 runs on 7 hits in just 1 1/3 innings as the Snappers put the game out of reach late.
Dominican Summer League - DSL Mariners 6 DSL Astros 0
The DSL Astros (0-1) dropped their season opener to the DSL Mariners 6-0. The game was scoreless heading into the 7th when the Mariners finally broke through and proceeded to score in each of the game's final three innings. 18 year old Elieser Hernandez tossed 5 shutout innings and third baseman Randy Cesar went 2 for 4 to lead the offense.

AAA - Iowa 2 Oklahoma City 1 (Game 1)
Brett Oberholtzer allowed just 2 runs on 4 hits in 5 1/3 innings, but the RedHawks (27-22) offense was stifled, and they dropped a tight one to the Cubs, 2-1. Jake Elmore had 2 of Oklahoma City's 3 hits and a stolen base, and Marc Krauss added a double, but the RedHawks went hitless with runners in scoring position in losing Game 1 of their doubleheader.
Iowa 4 Oklahoma City 3 (Game 2)
The RedHawks (27-23) rallied from a 3-0 deficit to tie the game, but Iowa got a game winning home run from Donnie Murphy in the bottom of the 6th to sweep their doubleheader. Philip Humber made his first start since his demotion and went 4 innings allowing 3 runs (1 earned) on 4 hits and fanning 5. He walked just one hitter, but hit two others. Eric Berger suffered the loss in relief.
AA - Arkansas 8 Corpus Christi 6
The Hooks (29-20) scored 5 times in the bottom of the 8th, but couldn't overcome an early 8-1 deficit in their 8-6 loss to the Travelers. Ben Orloff and Domingo Santana each drove in a pair of runs, and Jiovanni Mier reached base 3 times (singles, 2 walks) and scored twice in a losing effort. Josh Fields made another rehab appearance and was scored upon for the second straight outing allowing a run on 3 hits in an inning of work. Kenny Long and Matt Heidenreich combined on 3 2/3 innings of no-hit shutout relief ball.
Advanced A - Lancaster 18 Inland Empire 10
In your typical California League shootout, the JetHawks (29-20) rallied from deficits of 5-0, and 9-7 and defeated the 66ers 18-10 thanks to a 10-run 7th. Lancaster slugged 5 home runs including 2 by Brandon Meredith who finished the night 3 for 3 with 5 rbis despite not entering the game until the 6th inning as a pinch hitter. Delino DeShields picked up 4 hits, while Joe Sclafani, Preston Tucker and Chris Epps all had 3 runs batted in. Sclafani finished the night 2 for 4 with a pair of walks to raise his average on the year to .386 as he continues to fill in admirably for the injured Nolan Fontana at short. Theron Geith piched 2 scoreless innings in relief to lower his ERA on the year to 2.08 while Kyle Hallock earned the win to improve to 2-0.
Low A - Quad Cities 5 Clinton 2
The River Bandits bullpen tossed 6 scoreless innings as Quad Cities (26-23) defeated the LumberKings 5-2. Austin Elkins went 3 for 4, Jordan Scott had 2 hits and 2 walks, and Carlos Correa was 1 for 4 with a double and a walk as the River Bandits won despite going just 2 for 15 with runners in scoring position and stranding 14 runners on base. Gerardo Sanchez earned the win in relief and improved to 2-0 on the year. Jordan Jankowski continue his solid form as of late with 4 scoreless innings to earn his 2nd save and lowered his ERA to 2.70.

Ross Seaton (1-4, 8.21) finally got his first win of the season as the RedHawks (27-18) defeated the Grizzles 7-3. Fernando Martinez hit a three run homer, Jake Elmore homered and drove in a pair, and Brett Wallace reached base 4 times (2 singles, 2 walks) as the RedHawks offense overcame three errors by their defense en route to the win. Jason Stoffel pitched 2 scoreless innings and fanned three lowering his ERA since his promotion to AAA to 2.08. He's allowed just 7 hits in 13 innings with the RedHawks and is holding hitters to a .156 average.
AA Corpus Christi 8 Northwest Arkansas 2
Jake Buchanan allowed one unearned run in five innings lowering his ERA to 0.84 and improving his record to 5-0 as the Hooks (26-19) defeated the Naturals 8-2. Domingo Santana, Erik Castro and Michael Burgess all drove in a pair of runs as the Hooks scored in every inning from the 2nd to the 5th to erase an early 1-0 deficit. Over his past ten games, Castro is 18 for 39 with 5 doubles, 2 homers and 10 runs batted in. Josh Fields made his sixth rehab appearance, and fourth for Corpus Christi, and allowed his first run of the year in 2 innings of work.
Low A - Wisconsin 12 Quad Cities 5 (11 innings)
The River Bandits (23-21) rallied from a 5-0 deficit to send the game into extra innings, but the Timber Rattlers scored 7 times in the 11th to win 12-5. Austin Elkins hit his first home run of the year, and Jordan Scott, Carlos Correa and Miles Hamblin all had multi-hit games for the River Bandits. Jordan Jankowski started the game on the mound and fanned 6 in 4 innings of work, and did not walk a batter.

How to Respond to Last Night's Loss
Ok, so obviously I have no say in what happens to the Astros as they move forward from last night's debacle, but here's what I would do:
1) Send Jimmy Paredes back down to AAA where, if we're serious about making him an outfielder, he plays nowhere but the outfield EVERY DAY. Just pencil him in there: Paredes, 9. While the error was inexcusable last night, let's face it, the guy was a second baseman, we turned him into a third baseman, then last year he was a second baseman again, and now he's looking like an outfielder. Yes, playing the outfield is easier than playing the infield, but a guy's still not going to be good at it without playing time. Paredes can hit, but letting him learn the outfield at the Major League Level isn't going to do anything but mess up his confidence.
2) Keep Jake Elmore around. Elmore is versatile, and he can hit, run, doesn't strike out... In three games in which he spelled Jose Altuve, he basically was Jose Altuve hitting safely in every game and batting .364 (4/11). Reminds me of a faster Mark Loretta.
3) Make Brandon Barnes our every day centerfielder, shift Grossman to left and put J.D. Martinez out in right. Barnes is the only outfielder on the roster hitting above .240. And he's hitting .320. He's our best defensive outfielder, he runs well, he has some pop. LET HIM PLAY.
4) Move Hector Ambriz out of the 8th inning slot. Hector gets a bad wrap for what's really only amounted to two blown leads, but I don't see him as an 8th inning guy. I'd like to see him flipped with Paul Clemens or Travis Blackley and take some of those 6th inning responsibilities until he can harness his stuff. The only pitcher in the Astros pen with worse numbers is Edgar Gonzalez, there's no way he should be in there with the game on the line right now.
5) Less over-managing. I appreciate that we're playing the percentages, but I'd like to see our lefties face more than just lefties. Travis Blackley was an effective Major League starter last year, and Wesley Wright sports the lowest ERA in the bullpen. They don't have to come out of the game every time they're due to face a right-handed hitter.

Jarred Cosart was absolutely dominant fanning 10 in 5 2/3 innings as the RedHawks (19-12) defeated the Rainiers 6-1. Brett Wallace went 2 for 4 with a homer and 3 rbis to extend his hitting streak to 8 games, and Marc Krauss crushed his team-high 7th home run to lead the offense. Jake Elmore added 3 hits, needing just a home run to hit for the cycle and Che-Hsuan Lin was 2 for 3 with a stolen base. Rhiner Cruz made his second appearance for the RedHawks throwing a perfect 8th inning and striking out one.
AA - San Antonio 10 Corpus Christi 5
Matt Heidenreich couldn't hold a 4-0 lead as he surrendered 6 runs in just 1 1/3 innings and the Hooks (19-13) got beaten up by the Missions 10-5. Enrique Hernandez and Jonathan Meyer each drove in a pair of runs, and George Springer was 1 for 3 with a pair of stolen bases in a losing effort.

The JetHawks (18-13) came up on the short end of the stick in a back-and-forth affair as they were defeated by the Storm 8-5. Andrew Aplin homered, and Tyler Heineman was 2 for 5 with a double, but it wasn't enough as a pair of Carlos Perdomo errors and a passed ball led to 5 unearned runs. David Rollins started and fanned 6 in 5 innings but didn't factor in the decision.

My Early Season Minor League MVPs By Position
Let's get one thing straight. This is my list. It has nothing to do with how big a prospect someone is, it's merely reflective of who's been playing good baseball. Argue with it if you want, but this is purely based on my opinions after about a month of baseball. All stats are as of this morning. So without further ado...
Pitcher - Asher Wojciechowski (Oklahoma City)
There were a lot of good candidates to pick from here at every level, but at this point in the season, I give the nod to Wojo. In 6 appearances with AA Corpus Christi, Wojo posted an impressive 2.08 ERA. The 24 year old right hander held hitters to a .189 average and didn't allow a run in his first four appearances of the season spanning 18 innings. His performance in 2013 hasn't gone unnoticed either as he's already shot up to AAA on the heels of promotions to Jordan Lyles and Dallas Keuchel.

Brett Wallace was 2 for 4 with a double and a pair of rbis as the RedHawks (16-10) defeated the Sounds 6-2. On the mound, the RedHawks got a quality start from Wes Musick who allowed just a run on two hits in 6 innings. Jason Stoffel, fresh up from Corpus Christi, made his AAA debut by allowing a run in the 9th.

The Hooks (15-11) scored in the bottom of the 10th to tie the game, and in the bottom of the 11th to win an extra inning affair thanks to a walkoff single from Ben Orloff. Blair Walters earned his 3rd win of the year in relief and Kenny Long got the final six outs for his second save.

Catcher Roberto Pena stayed red hot with 2 more hits raising his average on the year to .375 in a losing effort, while Joe Sclafani and Terrell Joyce each added two hits of their own. Lance McCullers was the hard luck loser in this one again falling victim to unearned runs and he fell to 0-3 on the year despite a 2.08 ERA. Starting pitcher Daniel Minor allowed 2 runs on 5 hits in 5 innings, but did not factor in the decision.

The RedHawks (14-10) overcame an early 7-1 deficit and rallied for a 9-8 win behind a huge night from Trevor Crowe. Crowe went 3 for 3 with 4 runs scored, a homer, two walks and 3 stolen bases while Jake Elmore tripled, homered and knocked in 3 more to rally the RedHawks. Jonathan Villar also had a big game with 3 more hits and a pair of steals raising his average all the way up to .290 after a 2 for 34 start to the season. Starting pitcher Ross Seaton was shelled lasting just 1 2/3 innings and yielding 7 runs, but was bailed out by the offense and the bullpen. Kyle Hallock earned his first win in AAA with 4 1/3 scoreless innings, and Jose Valdez got the final six outs for his 7th save.

George Springer hit his 8th home run of the season, but that was all the offense the Hooks (13-11) could muster as they fell 4-2 to the RoughRiders. Matt Heidenreich pitched 4 solid innings allowing just one unearned run and lowering his ERA on the year to 8.15, but Ruben Alaniz took the loss in relief to fall to 0-3 despite allowing just two runs (one earned) in 3 innings of work. Domingo Santana and Michael Burgess each had two hits in the loss.

Down on the Farm - 4/23/13
AAA - Albuquerque 12 Oklahoma City 2
Starting pitcher Jordan Lyles lasted just one inning surrendering 8 hits and 5 runs as the Isotopes cruised to a 12-2 win over the RedHawks (10-9). When the dust had finally settled, the Isotopes had banged out 21 hits (19 singles!) off of 4 Oklahoma City pitchers. The RedHawks managed 9 hits of their own, but went 0 for 10 with runners in scoring position. Robbie Grossman (2/5), Jake Elmore (3/5) and Jimmy Paredes (2/4 with a homer) led the offense in a losing effort. Grossman was called up to replace the injured Justin Maxwell after the game.

Ben Orloff's sacrifice fly drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th, and Pat Urckfitz struck out the side in the bottom half to close out a 7-6 win for the Hooks (10-8). George Springer was poised to be the hero after going 3 for 4 with a pair of homers and 3 runs scored, but closer Jason Stoffel couldn't protect a 2-run lead in the 9th forcing the game into extra innings. Hooks pitchers struck out 17 in 10 innings of work.

The big inning wasted a strong start by Mike Hauschild who allowed just one unearned run in 5 innings of work to lower his ERA on the year to 2.93. Chase Davidson hit his first home run of the season to provide the River Bandits only offense. Carlos Correa went 0 for 4 with a pair of strikeouts lowering his average to .238.

Travis Blackley made his first rehab appearance for the Astros retiring the first six hitters he faced before hitting the leadoff man in the third and coming out of the game. Shortstop Jonathan Villar set the tone for the offense as he continued to break out of his season long slump notching almost as many hits in this game (3) as he had in the previous 12 (5). After starting the season 2 for 34, Villar is 6 for his last 12. Che-Hsuan Lin added a pair of rbis and Marc Krauss had a pair of hits and his 14th rbi of the season. Jose Valdez got the final out for his third save of the season

Newcome Eric Berger surrendered 4 runs in an inning and a third in his second appearance as part of the Astros organization turning this one into a blowout as the RedHawks (7-7) fell to the Express 8-4. Jake Elmore was 0 for 3 and saw his hitting streak end at 12, but teammate Trevor Crowe hit safely in his 12th straight game. The veteran outfielder is now hitting .327 on the season. Marc Krauss drove in 2 more runs (16) and Jimmy Paredes reached base safely 4 times to lead the offense.

Jorge De Leon led the Hooks pen with 4 scoreless innings of relief, but it wasn't enough as the RoughRiders got to Pat Urckfitz for two runs in the 17th. The Hooks went just 7 for 57 in the game. Rene Garcia was the only Corpus Christi player to get 2 hits and Enrique Hernandez homered for the second time this year.

Missed a day, so here's some catching up:
Tuesday
AAA - Round Rock 8 Oklahoma City 6
Brett Oberholtzer took a 4-0 lead into the third, but was roughed up for a 5 run inning, and the RedHawks (6-6) never recovered falling 8-6 to the Express. Brandon Laird went 1 for 5 in his last game before getting called up to Houston, and Marc Krauss drove in a pair of runs to give him 13 on the year in a losing effort. Jake Elmore continued his hot hitting going 1 for 2 with 2 walks and was hit by a pitch. He also stole a pair of bases. Elmore is now 21 for 47 to start the season and has hit in 11 straight.

Rene Garcia and George Springer hit home runs, but the Hooks (7-5) fell behind early and never recovered in a 9-3 loss to the Drillers. Austin Wates added two hits raising his average on the year to .341 in a losing effort. The game was still within reach until Matthew Heidenreich took the mound in the 6th. A 12 game winner last year, Heidenreich - acquired from the White Sox for Brett Myers - allowed 5 runs in just 1 1/3 innings of work raising his ERA on the year to 12.79.

The JetHawks (8-4) let a 5-0 lead slip away and eventually fell to the Mavericks 6-5 on a walkoff homer in the bottom of the 11th. Preston Tucker clubbed had 3 hits including his 4th home run of the season, and Drew Muren went 3 for 4 to lead the offense, but Lancaster was just 3 for 13 with runners in scoring position. Reliever Travis Ballew, a 23rd round pick in last year's draft pitched 2 perfect innings in which he struck out six. Ballew had a 1.62 ERA in 39 innings as a rookie.

Mitchell Lambson worked 3 2/3 scoreless innings in relief to keep the Bandits in the game.

Brandon Laird had 3 hits, Marc Krauss drove in 3 runs, and Jake Elmore extended his hitting streak to 10 games as the RedHawks (6-5) blew out the Redbirds 11-0. Wes Musick made his first start of the year and tossed 5 scoreless innings while Jarred Cosart and Kyle Hallock completed the shutout. Cosart, who worked 3 2/3 scoreless innings, has now allowed just one earned run in his first 12 2/3 innings this season. He's allowed just 7 hits and fanned 15.
AA - Tulsa 3 Corpus Christi 2
Asher Wojciechowski extended his scoreless innings streak to 14 with 5 more solid innings, but the Hooks (7-4) bullpen surrendered solo home runs in the 7th, 8th and 9th innings and lost on a walkoff blast by a score of 3-2. Austin Wates was 2 for 3 with a walk and two more stolen bases giving him an organization high of 7 this season. George Springer added his 10th run batted in of the year and Carlos Perez had his third straight 2-hit game in a losing effort.

The JetHawks (8-3) banged out 12 hits and drew 10 walks as the cruised to a blowout win over the High Desert Mavericks. Andrew Aplin tripled, homered and drove in 5, and Drew Muren and Preston Tucker added home runs to lead the route. Starter Tyson Perez was knocked out of the game in the 4th inning after allowing 5 runs in 3 2/3 innings, but Theron Geith tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief to earn the win, and David Rollins slammed the door with 4 scoreless innings in which he struck out 6 to earn his first save.
Brandon Laird had 3 hits, Marc Krauss drove in 3 runs, and Jake Elmore extended his hitting streak to 10 games as the RedHawks (6-5) blew out the Redbirds 11-0. Wes Musick made his first start of the year and tossed 5 scoreless innings while Jarred Cosart and Kyle Hallock completed the shutout. Cosart, who worked 3 2/3 scoreless innings, has now allowed just one earned run in his first 12 2/3 innings this season. He's allowed just 7 hits and fanned 15.
AA - Tulsa 3 Corpus Christi 2
Asher Wojciechowski extended his scoreless innings streak to 14 with 5 more solid innings, but the Hooks (7-4) bullpen surrendered solo home runs in the 7th, 8th and 9th innings and lost on a walkoff blast by a score of 3-2. Austin Wates was 2 for 3 with a walk and two more stolen bases giving him an organization high of 7 this season. George Springer added his 10th run batted in of the year and Carlos Perez had his third straight 2-hit game in a losing effort.
Advanced A - Lancaster 15 High Desert 5
The JetHawks (8-3) banged out 12 hits and drew 10 walks as the cruised to a blowout win over the High Desert Mavericks. Andrew Aplin tripled, homered and drove in 5, and Drew Muren and Preston Tucker added home runs to lead the route. Starter Tyson Perez was knocked out of the game in the 4th inning after allowing 5 runs in 3 2/3 innings, but Theron Geith tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief to earn the win, and David Rollins slammed the door with 4 scoreless innings in which he struck out 6 to earn his first save.

Down on the Farm - 4/14/13
AAA - Memphis 10 Oklahoma City 3
The RedHawks (5-5) took a 3-2 lead into the 7th, and the bullpen fell apart from there as the Redbirds scored 8 times over the final three innings en route to a 10-3 win. Jordan Lyles pitched 5 strong innings allowing just 2 runs on 5 hits, but left without a decision. The offense was paced by 3 hits from Trevor Crowe, 2 hits and 2 walks from Robbie Grossman, and the 2013 debut of Fernando Martinez who went 0 for 3 in his first rehab start, but did drive in a run. Jake Elmore extended his hitting streak to 9 games with a double and Brandon Laird also had a pair of hits in a losing effort.

The Hooks (7-3) managed just 5 hits, 2 of them by catcher Carlos Perez, as they came up short against Drillers, falling 6-3. Nick Tropeano (0-2) started for Corpus and went 5 innings allowing 3 runs on 5 hits while fanning 4. Austin Wates stole his 5th base of the year, but the Hooks were just 1 for 10 with runners in scoring position.

Backup catcher MP Cokinos added a solo homer, and Preston Tucker, Brandon Meredith and Andrew Aplin all contributed two hits apiece to pace an 11-hit attack. Chris Devenski fanned 7 in 4 scoreless innings of relief work to earn his second win of the year.

Rio Ruiz slugged his first home run of the season and Carlos Perdomo was 2 for 3 with a run scored starting in place of Carlos Correa as Quad Cities improved to 7-2 with a 3-2 win over the Chiefs. Vincent Velasquez started and pitched 5 solid innings to improve to 2-0 on the season while John Neely tossed a scoreless 9th to earn his first save.
