Around the AL West

Mariners 2 A's 0

Pitching was the story in Oakland on Monday night as Felix Hernandez threw 7 2/3 shutout innings and outdueled Brett Anderson in Seattle's 2-0 win. Oakland managed just 3 hits - two by DH Seth Smith - and went 0 for 4 with runners in scoring position. Franklin Gutierrez accounted for both of Seattle's runs when he delivered a 2-run single in the 5th scoring Dustin Ackley and Brendan Ryan. Jed Lowrie made his Oakland A's debut starting at short and hitting fifth. He went 0 for 3 with a walk and strikeout.

Angels 3 Reds 1

In a lineup that contains Mike Trout, Albert Pujols, and Josh Hamilton, who would've thought that the Opening Day Star would be catch Chris Iannetta? Iannetta drove in all three of L.A.'s runs with a solo home run in the 3rd and a 2-run single in the 13th as the Angels overcame 17 strikeouts and beat Cincinnati 3-1. The Angels staff led by Jered Weaver and a host of relievers allowed just 3 hits in 13 innings of work. Former Astro J.B. Shuck made his Angels debut pinch hitting for Weaver in the 7th and struck out.
